Things to Do Around Montrose & the San Juan Mountains

Your trip to Montrose isn’t just about the wedding—it’s a chance to explore one of Colorado’s most stunning regions! From relaxing in town to adventurous mountain escapes, there’s something for everyone.

Montrose

Montrose is full of small-town charm and easy activities. Stroll along Main Street to discover local boutiques, coffee shops, and breweries like Horsefly Brewing. History lovers can explore the Museum of the Mountain West or the Ute Indian Museum, while nature enthusiasts will enjoy the Montrose Botanic Gardens or a picnic at Chipeta Lake. For a big dose of scenery, visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, just minutes away, where you can take short hikes or simply soak in the dramatic views.

Ouray

Known as the “Switzerland of America,” Ouray is a mountain paradise about 30 minutes from the venue. Relax in natural hot springs, wander historic streets, or visit Box Canyon Falls for a quick hike to a roaring waterfall. For those who want a little more adventure, explore the Perimeter Trail, a scenic loop around town offering waterfalls, bridges, and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. If you’re feeling extra bold, try the Ouray Via Ferrata, jeep adventure tours through the San Juans, or drive the famous Million Dollar Highway for jaw-dropping scenery.

Ridgway

Just 20 minutes away, Ridgway offers a laid-back vibe with incredible scenery. Spend time at Ridgway State Park for hiking, fishing, or paddleboarding, or soak in the rustic Orvis Hot Springs (clothes optional!). The town also has great art galleries and local eateries, perfect for a relaxing afternoon after exploring the mountains.

Telluride

A little farther away (about 1 hour 30 minutes from the venue), Telluride is worth the drive for its world-class beauty and activities. Ride the free gondola between town and Mountain Village for stunning views, hike to Bear Creek Falls, or explore the famous Telluride Via Ferrata for an unforgettable adventure. In summer, enjoy wildflower hikes and alpine lakes. Even if you’re just strolling through its historic downtown, the scenery will take your breath away.
